celebrating samuel's 8th year with friends

This was Samuel's first friend party.  We have always had so much family around, that the family party has always been so big and he has never asked for one.  And let's be honest, a big group of boys the day after Halloween... I was waiting until Samuel asked for a party.  And this year he did.

We started off the party with giant bubbles.  I thought of it when Samuel wanted a "Mega Party" where everything was going to be huge.  But then he changed his mind and wanted a Beyblade party.  The bubble idea stayed, though.  As each friend showed up, we gave them a giant bubble wand.  And we did bubbles until everyone showed up.  If you haven't seen these, they are super easy to make and totally worth it.  I kinda used these instructions and cut the length of the cord and sticks in half since they were for kids.

And the bubble solution was:
2 quarts water
1/3 c. dawn dish soap
3 T. glycerin

The results were amazing.  But maybe not for everyone.  Birthday boy spent most of the time doing cartwheels, using the sticks as drumsticks, and asking when we got to play with Beyblades.
 The giant bubbles were awesome...
And we didn't want to stop...

But we did...
I set up three Beyblade stations, the Octagon, the dome, and the ice arena.  Karl made the octagon and I stuck the bowl of water in the freezer after seeing the idea online.
Next was pizza and a veggies.  Karl set them up to look like Beyblades.
 Then cake and icecream...
and let me tell you how icecream cups are the way to go when it comes to getting icecream to a ton of people all at once.
A few of the people that love Samuel...

...and a few more.
I had the fixed lens on the camera and it was impossible to fit everyone in one shot.  And did you know 8ish year old boys move around a lot?  That makes impossible to get photos of them all.

And even though it's blurry, I still can't resist posting one of this guy...
You wouldn't believe how much thought I put into these goodie bags.  I know that the last thing these kids needed was more candy and plastic stuff that was going to break.  So, we sent them home with their bubble wands, some bubble solution, a punch balloon, and a pack of sugarfree gum.

The important thing was that Samuel felt sufficiently celebrated.
And did he ever.

our halloween 2012

Halloween.  Smooshed right in between Maximus's birthday and Samuel's birthday.  Three big deals that I would love to savor but don't always do it like I want to.

Costumes.  Let's start with the easiest first.  Well, it was the easiest to make because we didn't make it.  Samuel begged for it when we were at Kmart buying a weed whacker.  I thought Karl said yes and Karl thought I said yes.  It wasn't even on sale.  I never buy things that aren't on sale.  Somehow it ended up in our cart, and then our car (we paid for it, of course), and before we could figure out what happened, Samuel was ripping the package open and wearing the flimsy plastic mask.  So, it was the hardest costume as far as price and letting him wear it.  Felt like I was giving up.  But the most important thing is that he was just as please being a Kmart Samurai Power Ranger, as if we had spent hours working on a costume.  And when he stuck his tongue through that little breath hole, it totally brought back memories of clear back when I was in kindergarten and my friend kept sticking her tongue in the breath hole of her Underdog mask.  The technology on these flimsy masks held on by a thin elastic and staples has not changed in all these years.  Why change a good thing, right?

Next up, Eva.  She knew she wanted to be the Statue of Liberty before we came back to Kauai so I stopped by the party store and picked up the head piece.  Goodness, sometimes I wish just stopping at the store that carries random things that I need for cheap.  Most of the time, I am fine, though.  An hour before the halloween party, I pulled some green fabric out of my stash and tied in on to her and she whipped up the torch (complete with a flashlight inside, clever girl) and her tablet. And now she is old enough that she can do the Google, too.  She she can find out exactly what it needed to look like.
Finally, Maximus.  I wouldn't be able to top his sumo outfit from last year.  It was too perfect.  I thought he would be so cute as cuddly Totoro.  It did end up adorable.  Especially to the 7 people that knew who Totoro was.  They went crazy over him.  I was worried that I wouldn't be able to build that thing from scratch.  I have limited skills and patience.  So, when I saw this shark costume for pretty cheap online, I thought it would be perfect.  It was the right color and shape.  All I had to do was alter it.  Quick, easy... right?  Not for me.
A bajillion hours later, I finished what seemed like a simple project.  Seamstresses, everywhere, I commend you.  Even just looking at this picture makes me want to cuddle him.  He was Maximus plus he was in a fuzzy fluffy costume. He actually wore the costume.  He didn't complain and throw it off, like maybe he should have in this Hawaiian weather.  Maybe because he knew that his mom might cry because she spent her time on it.
Okay, one more shot with Eva's stuffed Totoro sitting in the background.

All three Halloween kiddos together.  Older brother doing his job and teaching younger brother to do silly things like discreetly back into the bushes while mom is trying to take a photo.  And those ab muscles sticking through Sam's costume?  They didn't come in the costume.

There was a little neighborhood party, where we got to see the other kids, eat a few appetizers, and take some photos.

I went home and passed out glow sticks (our tradition since I can remember), and Karl took our crew around.  And since I did it when I was a kid, when they got home I made them dump out their stash for a photo.  And then for the first time in a long time, we sat back and watched our kids and thought how cute they were... Samuel blowing bubbles, Eva putting on the scary gloves and glasses and trying to scare an oblivious Maximus, Maximus eating any candy he could unwrap...  This is why we keep em' folks.
The candy.  Lot's of people complain about all the candy. I used to be like that.  But now we kind of like candy.  I still know the sugar is bad but we just eat it, anyway.  Or, rather, I put it in jars and we eat all the good stuff.  I threw out heaps of easter, valentine, and even Christmas candy, to make room in jars for the Halloween loot.  I felt bad.  Not because we didn't eat it, but because we got it in the first place.  I think the getting is our favorite part.  Getting is so much fun.
Here is a little video snippet of my favorite part of the night.  You can't really hear it, but Eva and Samuel are trying to trade and Maximus is eating his (or rather, anyone's) candy as fast as he can.

I get kind of bah humbug about Halloween.  It's a lot of overindulgence, overstimulation, and waste.  But now that the rush is over and all the decorations are down and costumes are put away, we have a few sweet memories that we wouldn't trade for anything.

eva and samuel: partying with their school

There is a lot to celebrate with the school that Eva and Samuel go to.  It has been such a great fit for our family.  It's the kind of school that I would want to have, if I had more time, energy, and patience.  And since I know how much of those three things it takes to run a school like this, it makes me that much more grateful.  I could go on and on about how I love the things that my kids tell me when they get home, how kind the teachers are and that they teach kindness to the students, how they have a garden and the kids help make healthy lunches with food from the garden, how the other parents are so nice about teaching me the ropes and will answer my bajillion texts with questions, how the kids are all so different and have learned to interact like a family rather just another kid in a learning factory... so many things.  Oh, but wait, this is a post about the Halloween party.  Guess I just couldn't help myself.

We put on a little Halloween party.  At the teachers' request, it wasn't a ghoulish, dark, Halloween party.  But just the right amount of Halloween to make it festive.

It was at my friend's house.  And my friend has this magic skill where everything she touches is beautiful.  When I thought a pumpkin painting station, I thought of old Cool Whip and sour cream containers, balled up paper towels, paint splats, and messes.  She brings out a flower arrangement, and cute containers to hold the paintbrushes, sprinkles the pumpkins and paint palettes just so.  It's a skill, you know. I love it.  And that is why she has a awesome style blog and I have a... random blog.
We made popcorn hands, something my family has been doing for years.  But this is the first year that is was so pretty.  Ya know, a little globe, cute mugs for the supplies, organic popped on the stove corn in a red enamel pot...
A knight and a Power Ranger working on their popcorn hands.
The (lovely) festivities continued with bingo, tattoos, a piñata, slime making, pin the nose on the jack-o-lantern, and ended with swimming.
Samuel was my super hero.  When I forgot the food coloring for the slime, he ran home an grabbed it lighting fast.
Maximus joined in.  He painted his pumpkin, he painted other kids' pumpkins, he painted his shorts (RIP orange shorts), he ate popcorn off the ground, he dispensed lot's of water from the water dispenser....
Who gets to have such cute teachers?  Oh, my kids do.  Lucky kids.
 Lining up...
Eva taking shot at the piñata.  She actually really loves those things.
There was food, of course.  And I have never seen food displayed so pretty at an elementary school party.  But then again, I have never thrown a party with Jamie and Lyn, before :).
And, I know, he doesn't even go to this school.  But I seem to have no self control when it comes to posting photos of this guy.  So happy about his cookie.  I get this happy about cookies, too.  But I try to play it cool.
I don't remember Halloween being such a big thing when I was little.  We celebrated it one day.  But now it's kind of like Halloween Hanukkah.  Days and days of celebration.  So, this was one of those celebrating days.

Awesome school, great people, lot's of food, games, crafts... Eva and Samuel, partying with their school.

samuel: special day

It was a special day for Samuel.  He was baptized and confirmed a member of our church.

He was surrounded by friends, family, and so so so much love.
He was excited for leis.  And Samuel, being the Samuel he is, got so many leis.
It was sweet to see him so happy.
Life will always be exciting for this boy.  He likes living on the edge, he likes pushing the limits, he likes doing things just because he felt like it.  I am so glad that he knows that even if he does happen mess up (because who doesn't mess up these days?), he knows that he can repent.  This isn't the easy road, in so many ways.  But I know that Samuel can do it.  He is such a good boy with a great big huge giant heart.
He was surrounded by special people all day.  And showered with love.
We are so grateful for all of the love that came his way.  From near, far, and up above.
So very grateful.

samuel turned eight

So much personality stuffed into one little kid.  Okay, maybe he's not so so so little anymore.  Just kind of little.  But he is still little enough that I wonder how his personality can be so big.  Maybe he was supposed to be two people.  Have you seen this kid move?  He is as fast as two people, too.

This has been a great year for Samuel.  He has grown so much.  Not too much.  But so much.
He is in the stage where posing for photos is full on awkward for him.  But real smiles.  Goofy smiles.  We get plenty of those.
But mostly, in front of the camera, he is choosing to be serious.  "I don't like to smile," he says.  Karl got this fake million dollar bill at the hardware store.  Samuel was thrilled.  Maybe less thrilled when he realized it was fake.
This was earlier this week at the beach.  He ran up with a sea urchin in his hands.  Brave little kid.  Those things terrify most.  He was so careful to quickly return it to the water.  I hope he stays little enough that he will always be excited to run up to me and show me what he has discovered.
Eight is kind of a big deal. I made a slideshow of some of his photos, but I made it too gigantor and it's taking forever to upload.  I'll try and share when it uploads in a billion years.

Happy birthday to one seriously -est kid.  Fastest, bravest, smartest, happiest, funniest, sweetest...
